Regular eye exams will not only provide you with clear and comfortable vision but they will also allow your optometrist to monitor your overall health including diabetes and hypertension.

The health of our eyes are directly linked to our systemic health. Here are some common health problems that can affect your eyes:

Diabetes can cause damage to many organs in your body including your eyes.   Your optometrist can see signs of diabetic changes in your eyes. A yearly eye exam is recommended for diabetic patients.  Annual eye exam for diabetic patients are covered under OHIP.

High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure can cause damage to the blood vessels in the eyes.  If you have high blood pressure you should have your eyes examined by an optometrist annually.

Cigarettes increase your chance of developing Age Related Macular Degeneration, the macula is the part of the retina responsible for your sharpest vision.  In macular degeneration, deposits form in the macula that impair your central vision.  It is important to quit smoking with the help of your doctors.

Diet and Vision

A healthy, well balanced diet can help maintain the health of your body as well as your eyes.

In this modern age all of us spend more and more time on computers and electronic devices.  Looking at a monitor for a long time can cause eyestrain, dry eyes, headaches, and general discomfort.  Here are some tips to help you relieve the symptoms:

  • Take frequent breaks
  • Rest your eyes and looks away from your computer and focus on distant objects
  • Upgrade your display – change from an old style cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor to a modern LCD screen
  • Have regular eye exams

No matter your age we recommend yearly eye exams.  Patients that are 19 years of age or younger can have a yearly eye exam covered under OHIP.  Eye exams during childhood are important to ensure proper visual development.
