EYE CARE TIPS

At Romin Optical we care about your vision.  Here are some of our eye care tips to help maintain healthy eyes and clear, comfortable vision.

Regular eye exams will not only provide you with clear and comfortable vision but they will also allow your optometrist to monitor your overall health including diabetes and hypertension.

The health of our eyes are directly linked to our systemic health. Here are some common health problems that can affect your eyes:

Diabetes

Diabetes can cause damage to many organs in your body including your eyes.   Your optometrist can see signs of diabetic changes in your eyes. A yearly eye exam is recommended for diabetic patients.  Annual eye exam for diabetic patients are covered under OHIP.

High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure can cause damage to the blood vessels in the eyes.  If you have high blood pressure you should have your eyes examined by an optometrist annually.

Smoking

Cigarettes increase your chance of developing Age Related Macular Degeneration, the macula is the part of the retina responsible for your sharpest vision.  In macular degeneration, deposits form in the macula that impair your central vision.  It is important to quit smoking with the help of your doctors.

Diet and Vision

A healthy, well balanced diet can help maintain the health of your body as well as your eyes.

In this modern age all of us spend more and more time on computers and electronic devices.  Looking at a monitor for a long time can cause eyestrain, dry eyes, headaches, and general discomfort.  Here are some tips to help you relieve the symptoms:

  • Take frequent breaks
  • Rest your eyes and looks away from your computer and focus on distant objects
  • Upgrade your display – change from an old style cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor to a modern LCD screen
  • Have regular eye exams

No matter your age we recommend yearly eye exams.  Patients that are 19 years of age or younger can have a yearly eye exam covered under OHIP.  Eye exams during childhood are important to ensure proper visual development.

As you age your eyes go through many changes.   As you turn 40 you will notice a diminished ability to focus up close.  Aging also increases your chances of developing Cataracts, Glaucoma, and Macular Degeneration.

Here at Romin Optical we are dedicated to help you with your visual need no matter what age.

Driving puts a great amount of stress on your vision.  Driving at night can specially be difficult because of the reflection from all the lights.  It is important to wear the correct type of lenses to help you see clearly and comfortably while driving.

Your optometrist will inform you if you are required to wear prescription glasses by law while driving.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause damage to many structures in the eye.  Some of the conditions affected by UV rays include Cataracts, Macular Degeneration and Cancer.  The best way to protect your eyes against ultraviolet radiation is to wear sunglasses.  Here at Romin Optical we provide you with a variety of sunglasses that are not only fashionable but provide you with 100% UV protection.
